They are vintage looking a nice throwback to the cowboy era. And there is no such thing as an impractical gun. You have some different options

Exposed hammers deliver a vintage appeal and allow for direct control but can catch and require manual cocking before each shot.
Internal hammers offer a sleek, hassle-free design for smoother handling but sacrifice the traditional look and feel.

I'm not planning to shoot skeet—this gun is more for fun, like blasting a pumpkin or two—but I also want it to be a viable option for dealing with nuisance animals around the property.

You can get yourself a Stoeger coach. Treat yourself to a novelty item I think "Fun" is a good enough purchase reason for yourself.
